One item is more difficult to find than others...

Even I am certainly not an expert, I will try to cover the rarety of certain given objects. Some philatelic items are easier to find than others.

Since Expo 58 was rich in philately, you had a number of philatelic items which were bought by everybody as a souvenir. And you had than a specific number of people who went only to the World Fair with the intention to create the philatelic souvenir of the Expo 58.

Based on my experience in setting up my collection, I have some view about one item in comparison of other items.

I will set an indication near a scan if that item is rare to find. I will indicate it by (R). I could have created a kind of graduation, but that would lead me too far.

Just note that I won't be able and will not provide any value to items, since I am not entitled to do so, and I do not have the experience.

Within the philatelic area of EXPO 58, you may consider that the rarity starts with the type of the item. Of course, one specific item is rarer or even unique (see below).

There are probably some other rare items. This section will certainly be growing in time. For the plaisure of my collegues collectors, I would like to show some unique pieces:

  • One of the results of the end of the WWII, was that external armies were settled down in Germany for controlling purposes. Belgium as one of the victims of the WWII, was also entitled to have some troops in Germany. These Belgian army settlements had each their own postal cancellations. They were identified through the words "Belgische Posterijen" followed by the abbreviation BPS + a number (I think from 1 to 9).

The cover hereafter depicts a FDC cancellation of such a Belgian army settlement (date of 17 April 1958).

  • Please note another rarity which is a combination of the several rareties depicted above: the date of the cancellations and the mixture of stamps and cancellations. The rarety below is a cover with the three date cancellations of the USA being from 2 July till 4 July, combined with the USA Stamp and FDC cancel:

  • The first day of Cambodja cover .... nothing more to add, except that this was not seen before. An Expo58 collector has sent me this one, never got it in my hands. Cambodja was effectively present at Expo58, but I do not know why there was this cover and the set of cancelled French stamps and the European cancellation. Cambodja was a French Colonie till 9 Sept 1953 (close to 13 September ? cancellation of the European set of stamps ????). Any comment on this is welcome !

  • The special Cancellation of the RTT (Régie des Télégraphes et Téléphones) for Brussels Exposition - extremely rare to be found. The only information that I have found about this is: The postal office of the RTT was near the Postal Office of the Expo 58 as from November 1957 - and the cancellation had also the number 1. The cancellation was used for activities which were related to the RTT, being mainly the so-called Urgent Dispatches - (Telegram). As from 15.4.1958, there were also Postal Offices of the RTT 1, 2 and 3 and were all located near the respective Postal Offices 1, 2 and 3.
