A set of 16 stamps of the United Nations have been issued for normal stamps (10 stamps) and a set for airmail(6 stamps).

The stamps have been designed and engraved by different people as detailed below.

The stamps have been issued in order to finance the United Nations presence at the Expo 58. The set consists out of 2 stamps representing the UN and 14 stamps representing UN affiliates.

Two types of margins:

  • 1. On four sides, the words "United Nations, Nations Unies, Verenigde Naties, Belgique, Belgie" French, Dutch and English: upper left corner symbol of the UN, upper right corner symbol of the Exhibition; lower left right denomination of stamp.
  • 2. On four sides the words "United Nations, Nations Unies, Verenigde Naties, Belgique, Belgie", the words "POSTE AERIENNE LUCHTPOST" for airmail; symbol of the Exhibition and the United Nations somewhere in the design

Every stamps has been issued in sheets of 30 stamps each. 600.000 sets of 16 stamps has been printed (no more), except for the values of 1F, 1.50F, 2.50F and 5F, which were sold on a per use basis (no limits). The complete set of 16 stamps with a total value of 100F, were sold per subscription from 15 April till 15 May 1958.

If the number of 600.000 would not have been sold, the set was available for sale at the Pavilion of the United Nations, at the Brussels Office 1 and the United Nations office in New York (!) till 17 October 1958. The sale of the values 1F, 1.50F, 2.50F and 5F was possible during the duration of the Expo 58 happening at the above mentioned offices as well. Finally only a total of 340.771 sets of 16 stamps have been sold.

Any postal use of the stamps of the United Nations was only possible if the item was posted at the Pavilion of the United Nations till 17 October.

Final information (not confirmed): The set of stamps was not available before end of April, beginning of May. The official first day cover was cancelled 17/04/1958. Covers with official FD cancellations of 17 April are limited to the set sold separately.

International Labour Organisation symbols of Industry, Science, Trade (0.50F)

Food and Agriculture Organisation (1F)

United Nations Door (1.50F)

World Bank (2F)

Represents the participation of the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development in the building of factoring, dams, etc. -- the emblem of the Bank, words "WORLD BANK"; factories with smoking chimneys at top, and a dam below the bank emblem.

UNESCO (2.50F)

The design honors UNESCO, with symbols of science, education and culture -- the UNESCO symbol in a bright light at center, two retorts at right for science, an open book showing the map of the world and the lyre symbolizing study and universal music.

U.N. Pavilion at the Exhibition (3F)

Arranged against a background of the UN emblem is the United Nations and the Specialized Agencies Pavilion at the Brussels Exhibition. The only value of the postage using the type 2 of the marginal designs.

Honoring the International Communication Union (ICU) with the symbols of the UIT (still existing today), telephony, telegraphy and radio, and the words "INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATION UNION".

International Civil Aviation (5F)

Honoring the International Civil Aviation Organisation -- shows night and light shading of the stamp; in the center a symbolic figure wearing the uniform of the International Airways Administration standing before an arrow, signals directions to a landing aircraft; a radio - oceanic weather ship is seen in the background; at the top the insignia of the organisation and the words "INTERNATIONAL / CIVIL AVIATION / ORGANISATION".

World Meteorological Organisation (6F)
